Based on comparing with the shear sense indicators in rocks systematically summarized, the indicators in coal have been preliminarily researched. It is found that there are some special kinds of shear sense indicators such as pinnate veins. The investigation of shear sense indicators in coals can provide a basis for determination of local shear stress orientation, hence for determination of the whole stress field.
