SOME FUNDAMENTAL PROBLEMS ABOUT SEQUENCE STRATIGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF COAL BASIN

  • In Palaeozoic, mesozoic and cenozoic coal basins of China, approaches by sequence stratigraphy, distinguishing sequence boundaries, dividing sequence stratigraphic units, reconstructing depositional system tract and predicting optimum coal-rich units, are being conducted. However, models of sequence strata established by the North America geologists can not be simply used in China due to differences in geological backgrounds of different coal basins. Thus,it is necessary to reestablish framework models of sequence stratigraphy for China basins of different patterns based on their special geological backgrounds, and, objectively evaluate controlling functions of tectonics,sea-level changes, palaeoclimate, and sediments supply over sequence formation.
