Hoek-Brown failure criterion superiority for rocky slop stability analysis

  • The paper introduced the newest semi empirical criterion Hoek-Brown yield used to estimate shearing strength of complete rock or the jointed rock mass. In combination with slope project and based on the intensity discount, the side slope safety coefficient was computed, simulation was compared with the equivalent Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion, the use of the Hoek-Brown yield criterion is based on the plastic flow principle of stress level, rock mass structure, rock strength, stress condition and other influencing factors were considered, reflecting well the nonlinear destruction characteristic and mechanism of rock mass, conforming to the jointed rock mass distortion and destruction characteristic.
