Abstract: Seven major target zones with potential coal measures underneath Cretaceous red layer were located by optical and digital image processing and through a comprehensive study on geological interpretation of satllite images and geological data from Binlai coal field in Southert Hunan province. The study provided basis and information for coal reconnaissance in the province during the Eight "Five-Year Plan", and showed good results for premary coal investigation.
